Preparing Your Hot Tub For Winter

Hot tub owners, there are some essential steps that you need to take to prepare your hot tub for winter. All you need is some time and the right materials!

The best ways to prepare your hot tub for winter.

It’s getting colder out there, which means it’s time to start preparing your at-home jacuzzi for the winter months.

The best ways to prepare your hot tub for winter include emptying your tub, cleaning the filters, loosening any fittings, and changing the settings. Some hot tub owners enjoy their spa all year round, while others close it down when it gets too cold. Whether you plan on using yours or not, there are some important steps to take when the temps start to drop.

Prepping your hot tub for winter isn’t complicated, but it does take time. It also involves many of the things that you do during the warmer months to keep it clean. Block out a Saturday afternoon to take care of your tub. Then, you won’t have to worry about it all winter long! Set yourself up for success with these best practices.

Prep Your Hot Tub For Winter - If You Want to Close it Down

So, you’ve decided to close up shop (otherwise known as your hot tub) for the winter. Most hot tub owners enjoy their jacuzzis the most once it starts to get colder. But, if you live in a place that experiences very harsh winters, it’s probably best to close yours down for the season.

Step 1:

Shut down your hot tub by turning off the heater and spa. Drain the tub completely, making sure to empty the air blowers if you have them.

Step 2:

Remove the filters (and filter basket) and put them in a cleaning product to soak. Wash them thoroughly, and store them in a dry place.

Step 3:

Loosen all of the fittings on your tub, especially the drain plugs. If you really want to make sure to remove all excess water, consider using a shop vac. Make sure that the blow jets are completely empty and dry as well. If water gets stuck in your hot tub and then freezes, you’ll be in serious trouble!

Step 4:

Clean your entire jacuzzi with a non-abrasive cleaner and a sponge. Place the cover on top and make sure that it’s closed tightly. The cover will protect your at-home spa from rain, snow, and wind.

Winterize Your Hot Tub - If You Want to Use it

There’s something so special about enjoying a hot tub in the colder months. And there’s something REALLY special about enjoying it while it snows. It’s magical! If you’d like to winterize your hot tub so that you can use it during the colder months, there are some different steps to take!

Step 1:

Drain your hot tub and give it a deep clean. You can use a non-abrasive cleaner and a rag. Make sure to get in all those nooks and crannies  – including the jets and filters! When you’ve finished, refill the water.

Step 2:

This step applies if you want to prepare your hot tub for winter in a very cold climate. Many models have settings to protect your equipment from freezing over. When you turn on the cold weather mode, sensors will detect if the water is getting too cold. Your tub will automatically turn on for a few minutes to keep things from freezing over. Check out your user’s manual to determine how to activate yours.

Step 3:

Always keep your hot tub covered. While this rule applies all year round to avoid any debris in your tub, it’s even more important in the winter! When you keep your hot tub firmly covered it will also keep any excess heat trapped inside. This will save you from having to keep the heater on – which will help you save on your electric bill. Score!
