Top Tips For Cleaning a Hot Tub

Cleaning a hot tub involves a bit of elbow grease, but it isn’t difficult! Plus, you’ll be able to enjoy your at-home spa to the fullest when it’s squeaky clean.

What’s the best way to clean a hot tub?

Owning a hot tub isn’t all about rest and relaxation – if you’re not cleaning your hot tub on a daily, weekly, and monthly schedule, you’re not doing it enough! In order to make the most out of your jacuzzi, you need to keep it in tip-top condition.

When it comes to cleaning a hot tub, there are a few important steps to keep in mind. You need to tend to your hot tub daily, weekly, and monthly. Cleaning a hot tub is so much more than just removing debris such as fallen leaves. You need to keep an eye on the pH levels, clean the filters, and drain the tub.

Your at-home spa can get pretty dirty faster than you’d think. From debris from your backyard to beauty products such as sunscreen and lotions, it’s easy to understand why! With a little bit of dedication, you can enjoy a clean hot tub all the time.

Cleaning a hot tub: daily tasks

Even if you don’t use your hot tub every day, you should keep an eye on it to make sure that it stays clean. One tip to cut back on daily cleaning is to invest in a high-quality hot tub cover. This will protect the water from any fallen leaves, branches, or the like.

Here are a few easy (and quick) daily tasks that will help keep your jacuzzi sparkling:

  • Remove any garden debris after each use (and every day if you don’t have a hot tub cover).
  • Wipe down the exterior of the tub as well as the interior above the waterline.
  • Check the pH and sanitizer levels in the water. This will ensure that there aren’t any nasty bacteria living in your tub! Use bromine and chlorine to sanitize your water. If you have sensitive skin, opt for bromine. Your pH level should always be between 7.2 and 7.4.

The best way to clean a hot tub: weekly tasks

If you’re passionate about keeping your backyard oasis, well, an oasis, there are a few weekly cleaning tasks you’ll want to fit into your schedule. You may be able to get away with doing the following every other week — it really depends on how much you use your tub.

  • Turn off your hot tub, unscrew the skimmer basket, and remove any built-up debris.
  • To break down the chloramines that build up in the water (thanks to sweat, dead skin, and lotions), you need to “shock” the water as you would with a pool. Use chlorine and non-chlorine shock granules. This process will also get rid of any bacteria build-up in the water.
  • Make sure you wait at least 24 hours to use your hot tub after you’ve done a chlorine treatment.

Keep your hot tub clean: monthly tasks

You don’t need to perform these tasks every month, but it’s a good idea to do a deep clean every 3-4 months. Think of it this way: the more often you clean your hot tub, the better you’ll feel when you’re in the water!

  • Drain all of the water from your jacuzzi. Before you do, put a cleaning product in the water, turn off the jets, and leave it in the tub overnight.
  • In the morning, unplug the tub and let the water drain out. Remove the filters and place them in a bucket of water with some filter cleaning solution. Let the filters soak overnight for the best results.
  • Wipe down the inside of your hot tub with a non-abrasive cleaner and rag. Remove any built-up scum and dirt. If you want to use a more natural product to clean, opt for distilled vinegar (if you don’t mind the smell!).
  • Refill the tub with clean and fresh water. Once it’s filled, turn the temperature up to your preferred setting.
  • Make sure to put the “start-up” chemicals into the water to keep the pH levels at that sweet spot between 7.2 and 7.4.

Perform these daily, weekly, and monthly tasks, and cleaning your hot tub should be easy, quick, and rewarding!
