What To Look For When Considering A Pool Alarm

If you own a pool you may be thinking about investing in a pool alarm. It’s a great idea for keeping your pool (and your backyard!) safe. Below you’ll find some things to keep in mind before you buy.

Key points to be aware of before purchasing a pool alarm.

Pool owners, we know that keeping your pool, home, and family safe is of utmost importance. You’ve already brushed up on your water safety tips, you know what to do to maintain your pool, and you may have even installed pool lights to make nighttime swimming safer. If you want to take your pool safety up a notch, it may be time to consider a pool alarm system.

Having a pool in your backyard is a major responsibility. When you purchase a pool alarm, not only can you can feel better about keeping out intruders, but it can also ensure that your loved ones stay safe. It can be really helpful if you have young children who have a tendency to wander to places where they shouldn’t be. A pool alarm can also keep your pets out of harm's way.

A pool alarm can bring you a lot of peace of mind. Let’s get into why you should install one, what to look for when shopping around, and the benefits of a pool alarm!

Why You May Want To Consider A Pool Alarm

The number one reason why you may want to consider a pool alarm is that it can help keep people safe. Inexperienced swimmers, children, and animals can easily slip and fall and go into a panic once they hit the water. Purchasing a pool alarm for kids who may not know how to swim could help save lives — it may sound dramatic, but trust us!

Hundreds of children drown each year, and in an effort to prevent it, many states now require a pool alarm for residential pools that don’t have an automatic cover. Depending on where you live, you may be required by law to have an alarm in your pool.

Some pool owners may also have a problem with intruders that sneak into their backyard to use their pool. When you have an alarm system in place, you can avoid any issues like this as well!

What To Look For When Shopping For A Pool Alarm

Before you start shopping, you’re going to need to determine your needs first. What’s your budget? What size is your pool? Is it inground or above ground? All of these key points are essential when deciding on what type of alarm will work best for you.

You’ll also want to consider what type of sensor you’re interested in. Do you want a pool alarm sensor that works with wristbands? Or, would you prefer something that can detect surface waves or subsurface movement? Do you want an infrared perimeter sensor?

Make sure that you have the answers to these questions locked down before you head to a store or shop online.

The Different Types of Pool Alarm Systems

Not all pool alarms are created equally. Here are the main types to choose from:

  • Surface movement detector: The alarm will go off when there is enough movement in the pool to cause waves. It floats on top of the water and must be removed before swimming for obvious reasons! The drawback to these types of alarms is that wind or falling debris can cause them to go off.
  • Subsurface detector: This type of pool alarm can be installed directly on the side of the pool. It detects movement that happens below the surface. It’s less sensitive than surface movement alarms, which also means that it may not detect very small pets or children that fall into the water.
  • Immersion wristband detector: The wristband system is a great pool alarm for kids option. As soon as it gets wet, the alarm will go off. The obvious disadvantage here is that it only works if you make sure to place the wristband on your child before approaching the pool.
  • Surface and subsurface movement detector: Arguably the best pool alarm sensor system. This type of alarm has the ability to detect both surface and subsurface movement in your pool.

The Benefits Of Having A Pool Alarm

The benefits of having a pool alarm are many! You’ll feel more at ease when your children and pets play outside. The truth is, even if you’re vigilant about watching your kids swim, accidents can happen. You’ll also be able to protect your backyard from any unwanted guests — and even neighborhood children who may get lost and end up in your yard. It’s all about creating a safe and enjoyable environment that everyone can enjoy!
